About the 2025 list

This year’s rankings offer a statistical analysis of the top-performing high schools in the Greater Boston area. To ensure accuracy and consistency, it is compiled with the most recent data available at presstime from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), which publishes a limited amount of information on each school, including MCAS and SAT scores. In an effort to provide additional transparency, we’ve included median household income and home prices for each high school’s town(s). We have also included several “honor roll” lists so you can see in what areas, exactly, different schools excel, as well as a list of high-performing schools in areas with lower median home prices.

Note: Scroll down and then right to see all categories. To view the top 100 schools all at once, choose ‘100 entries per page.’

Methodology: This chart ranks public high schools in towns or districts within, or partially within, I-495. To compile the list, we used the most recent data for each school available at presstime from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In cases of missing information, we used data from a previous year as necessary. In some cases where no data was available, a value equal to the weighted average of a school’s other categories was used. We omitted highly specialized schools and schools reporting insufficient information, as well as charter schools.

To calculate the rankings, statistician George Recck, director of the Math Resource Center at Babson College, analyzed the results, comparing each high school’s data points to the overall average for all schools. He then applied a percentage weight to the standardized value for each school to create an aggregate “score” to determine each high school’s rank. We considered it more desirable to have smaller class sizes and lower student-to-teacher ratios.

Median home prices, provided by the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and MLS Property Information Network, are from 2024. Median household incomes are from the Census’s American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates (2019–2023) and reflect 2023 dollars. For schools that serve multiple cities or towns, a weighted average for median home price and median household income was created based on the population of each city or town. Neither of these data points factored into a school’s overall ranking.

To assess schools more comprehensively than test scores alone allow, this year we’ve added three new categories for each high school—percentage of students participating in an arts course, percentage of students completing at least one digital literacy or computer science course, and percentage of 11th and 12th grade students completing at least one advanced course, which can be found on DESE’s School and District Report Cards.

About the 2024 list

This year’s rankings offer a statistical analysis of the top-performing high schools in the Greater Boston area. To ensure accuracy and consistency, it is compiled with the most recent data available at presstime from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which publishes a limited amount of information on each school, including MCAS and SAT scores. In an effort to provide additional transparency, we’ve included median household income and home prices for each high school’s town(s). We have also included several “honor roll” lists so you can see in what areas, exactly, different schools excel, as well as a list of high-performing schools in areas with lower median home prices.

Note: Scroll down and right to see all categories. To view the top 100 schools all at once, choose ‘Show 100 entries.’

Updated September 10, 2024: We incorrectly entered Burlington High School’s educator evaluation data for percent proficient; the correct percentage is 94.9%. Statistician George Recck re-calculated the list, and, as a result, several schools’ rankings have shifted. The updated standings are now reflected below.

Median home prices, provided by the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and MLS Property Information Network, are from 2023; median household incomes, from the Census’s American Community Survey, are from 2018 to 2022 and reflect 2022 dollars. For schools that serve multiple cities or towns, a weighted average for median home price and median household income was created based on the population of each town. Neither of these data points factored into a school’s overall ranking. We considered it more desirable to have a smaller class size and a lower student-to-teacher ratio.

About this year’s list

The 2023 rankings offer a statistical analysis of the top public high schools in Greater Boston. To ensure accuracy and consistency, it is compiled with the most recent data available at press time from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which publishes a limited amount of information on each school, including MCAS and SAT scores. In an effort to provide additional transparency, this year’s chart again includes median household income and home prices for each high school’s town(s). We have also included several “honor roll” lists so you can see in what areas, exactly, different schools excel, as well as a list of high-performing schools in areas with lower median home prices.

Median home prices, provided by the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and MLS Property Information Network, are from 2022; median household incomes, from the Census’s American Community Survey, are from 2017 to 2021 and reflect 2021 dollars. For schools that serve multiple cities or towns, a weighted average for median home price and median household income was created based on the population of each town. Neither of these data points factored into a school’s overall ranking. We considered it more desirable to have a smaller class size and a lower student-to-teacher ratio.

20 Ways to Get Your Kid into College…Legally https://www.bostonmagazine.com/education/boston-schools-2019/ Tue, 27 Aug 2019 09:47:54 +0000

It’s the story everyone’s been talking about since Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling stood in Boston federal court on March 12, 2019, and announced charges against 50 people—including A-list Hollywood stars—in a college admissions scandal that rocked the higher education industry and reverberated across the country and the world. Many Americans were shocked to hear about a system by which the rich and famous could get away with bribing athletic coaches and paying to have answers changed on standardized tests—but not everyone. “For those of us who have read The Price of Admission: How America’s Ruling Class Buys Its Way into Elite Colleges—And Who Gets Left Outside the Gates, the admissions scandal was not surprising,” says Sharon Olofsson, a Lexington-based college consultant. “People have been getting in for a long time in a lot of different ways.” The good news? There are plenty of legal ways you can boost your son’s or daughter’s chances of getting into his or her dream school, and not all of them require being a former president or donating a building. To find out what parents and students can do right now to get a leg up, we asked locally based independent college consultants like Olofsson to give us the inside scoop. The result? This scandalously simple guide to getting your kid into college—without going to jail.

Best Schools 2014

Our exclusive ranking of 65 area high schools.

Should I stay or should I go? That’s the question nearly all parents ask themselves at some point during the 15-plus years that their kids attend school. Sometimes the grass just looks greener at the public school in the next town over. And sometimes, it actually is greener. To complicate matters, the region has no dearth of private schools vying for your attention (and money). Boasting stratospheric SAT scores and country club–like campuses, they promise to shape your unruly teen into a polished Ivy League–bound young adult.

To help you address these potentially life-changing choices, we chased down and analyzed a dizzying array of data—test scores, student-to-teacher ratios, graduation rates—to produce proprietary rankings of both public and private high schools. We also explored the classic what if we moved dilemma by breaking down the relative costs of relocating to a “best school” town versus staying put and going the private school route.

Does the town next door truly offer better opportunities? Check out our charts to find out.

How to Game the College Rankings

Northeastern University executed one of the most dramatic turnarounds in higher education. Its recipe for success? A single-minded focus on just one list.

Methodology: We gathered the most recent available data at press time on public schools from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (doe.mass.edu). Private school information was provided by those schools. We also consulted town and school websites if necessary. Statistician George Recck, the director of the Math Resource Center at Babson College, calculated the mean scores for each category, and then ranked the schools based on a weighted average of each school data point’s difference from the mean, using mean values when data was unavailable. Only public schools within the Greater Boston I-495 boundary were included.

Once again, we spent the summer compiling our annual in-depth survey of Boston’s best schools. With a focus on public high schools this year, we dug through countless databases from the Massachusetts Department of ?Elementary and Secondary Education. We called (and called and called) more than 200 high schools in the area (as usual, we confined our analysis to cities and towns inside I-495) to determine graduation rates, student-teacher ratios, number of extracurriculars, and so on. And then we crunched the numbers to come up with our proprietary ranking.

Since there’s no one measure to rate the quality of a high school, we used a formula that incorporates 13 different data points. We gave the most weight to academics, including performance on the MCAS, the SATs, and AP exams, because a school’s first priority is a proper education. We also factored in both graduation rates and the percentage of students who go to college. This year, we dialed back—slightly—the importance placed on student-teacher ratio and per-pupil spending, because while they do contribute to learning, recent studies show that they’re not educational silver bullets. Finally, we considered the number of sports and clubs offered, since extracurricular activities are essential to teaching teamwork and leadership. They also look good on college applications.

We’ve built an online tool that lets you sort through the data on all the Boston schools. That way, you can evaluate the categories you find most important—academic or otherwise.
